Sump pumps can be installed to remove water from flooded basements and cellars creating space from otherwise unusable areas. Systems can be fully automated using either mechanical or electronic float switches that activate the sump pumps at predetermined water levels. More recently, changes to water table heights and rain intensity through both farm irrigation and global warming are causing previously ‘low risk’ areas to experience flooding similar to those in flood plain areas.
